Last night, Collingwood Yards was the site of a powerful Law Week event that explored how the justice system intersects with the lives of children and young people—particularly those with an incarcerated parent. Behind the Sentence: Young Voices on Family and Incarceration brought together a diverse panel of experts and advocates to share insights on justice, community, and systemic reform.
Supported by the NJC, this event aligned with Law Week’s 2025 theme, ‘when law meets life’, and focused on how legal, educational, and social systems can work together to support families affected by incarceration. The panel discussion highlighted community-driven approaches—such as restorative justice and culturally safe practice—that promote healing, connection, and long-term support for young people.
Our sincere thanks to the speakers:
· Ralph Gotlib – Principal, Bindjiroo Yaluk Community School
· Stevie Wright – Policy & Secretariat Lead, SNAICC – National Voice for our Children
· Associate Professor Catherine Flynn – Head of Social Work, Monash University
· Moana Wati – National Practice Manager, SHINE for Kids
· Vinnie Shin – Program Manager, Children and Young People's Rights Program, Westjustice.
The discussion was expertly facilitated by Rachel Powning, General Manager of the Neighbourhood Justice Centre.
Speakers offered deep insight into the challenges faced by children of incarcerated parents, while also showcasing promising programs and pathways forward. The importance of cross-sector collaboration and lived experience was a strong theme, as was the critical need to address stigma, trauma, and cultural disconnection—especially for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
Following the panel, artist Dr Paula Mahoney launched, Behind the Sentence, a projection artwork now displayed on the walls of Collingwood Yards. Created in collaboration with SHINE for Kids and Monash University, the piece gives voice to young people whose stories are rarely heard and reminds us of the transformative role art can play in social change.
